Hanover, N.H. -
The Boston College women's tennis team emerged victorious in a pair of matches against No. 63 Purdue University, 4-3, and Dartmouth College, 5-2, to rack up its third and fourth consecutive wins. The Eagles (6-3, 2-0 ACC) topped the Boilermakers (6-2) at home on Saturday, Feb. 26, before defeating the Big Green (4-5, 1-1 Ivy League) on Sunday afternoon at the Alexis Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, N.H.
When Purdue came to town, BC was forced to rally in singles play after its only doubles win came from senior Katharine Attwell and junior Katarina Gajic on court three.
Freshman Veronica Corning got the team rolling with a win, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles over Anna Dushkina and Gajic kept it going by beating Bhavani Tirumurti, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 3 spot.
Purdue's Jennifer Rabot briefly evened the match, 2-2, with a win on No. 1 singles, but Attwell's straight set victory, 7-5, 7-5, on the fifth court put BC back up, 3-2.
With the match prime for the taking, junior Erina Kikuchi came out on top over Mara Schmidt, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for Boston College.
Against Dartmouth, the Eagles captured the doubles point with wins on No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. On the second court, Kikuchi and Corning topped Georgiana Smyser and Ryan Reichel, 8-6, while senior Attwell and Gajic took their second win of the weekend with an 8-5 decision over Jeri Reichel and Christina Danosi in the third position.
BC then took four of the singles matches over the Big Green, taking three in straight sets, to add another tally in the win column.
Corning beat Reichel, 6-3, 6-3, and Attwell topped Danosi, 6-4, 6-3, for the second time on the day and sophomore Olga Khmylev defeated Smyser, 6-1, 6-1, at number four, five and six singles respectively.
Kikuchi claimed her second singles match of the weekend as well, besting Sarah Leonard, 6-3, 2-6, 11-9.
The Eagles will not compete until beginning a west coast tour on March 8 at San Diego University.
