Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
The Boston College softball team gathered at the William J. Flynn Recreation Complex on Friday, Feb. 18 to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Boston College. Led by junior Brittany Wilkins, the Eagles helped BC achieve its goal of $140,000, with a $2,198 contribution of their own.
"I wanted to start a Relay For Life team this year, because cancer has taken the lives of many in my own life," Wilkins said. "I lost both sets of grandparents to cancer, recently losing my grandmother, and last year my best friend lost her 14-year-old cousin, making me realize that cancer can happen to anyone at any age."
From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., the group participated in various festivities ranging from the traditional illuminated walk to a less conventional freeze dance competition. Participants also heard guest speakers render their personal experiences in the fight against cancer.
"We have been traveling the past few seasons, so this was the first time that we had the opportunity to participate in the Relay For Life of Boston College," Wilkins continued. "Cancer hits very close to home for many people, so it was great to donate money that helps raise awareness and support the fight for a cure for cancer."
