Schaus and Stack Nominated For Patty Kazmaier Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Molly Schaus and Kelli Stack are among the twenty-six players nominated for the 2011 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented by Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award is annually bestowed upon the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey.
Both Schaus and Stack have were nominated for the award in 2009, with Schaus advancing to become a finalist.
Schaus is currently ranked third in the NCAA in goals against average (1.42), fifth in save percentage (.941) sixth in winning percentage (.793), and tied for 11th in shuouts (4). She leads HockeyEast in goals against average and save percentage and is second in winning percentage. In the 2010-11 regular season, she recorded a 21-4-4 record with 656 saves, including four games with 30 or more stops. This season she was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week once and received the Bertagna Goaltending Award for the third time in her career following BC's win in the Beanpot Championship, the third Schaus has been a part of during her time at the Heights.
Stack is ranked 10th in the NCAA with 53 points from 33 goals and 20 assists. This season she becam BC's all-time Career Points scorer, surpassing the previous record set by Erin Magee in 1999. She is ranked first in the country for shorthanded goals (4), third in goals per game (1.03), tied for third in game-winning goals (7), and tied for fifth in power-play goals (8). She leads Hockey East in points, goals, power-play points and goals, shorthanded points and goals, and game-winning goals and is tied for fifth in assists. Over the course of the season she has racked up Hockey East Player of the Month honors twice and Player of the Week three times. Stack has amassed an impressive 18 multiple-point games this season.
Held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Frozen Four, the 2011 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented by LECOM, will be given out at a brunch ceremony on March 19 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, Pa.
The list of 26 nominated players includes 17 forwards, five goaltenders and four defensemen hailing from 12 different schools in all four NCAA Division I women's ice hockey leagues. Mercyhurst College, host of the 2011 NCAA Women's Frozen Four, leads all schools with five nominated players.
The 34 NCAA Division I women's ice hockey head coaches will select the top-10 finalists from among the group of 26 nominees, with the announcement taking place March 3. A 13-member selection committee will choose the three finalists (announced March 10), as well as the award recipient, which will be announced live at the brunch ceremony in Erie on March 19.

The award is named in honor of the late Patty Kazmaier, who was a four-year varsity letter-winner and All-Ivy League defenseman for Princeton University from 1981-86. An accomplished athlete who helped lead the Tigers to the Ivy League Championship in three consecutive seasons (1981-84), Patty Kazmaier-Sandt died on Feb. 15, 1990, at the age of 28, following a long struggle with a rare blood disease.
