CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Five Eagles scored double-digit points, as Boston College (3-6) fell, 70-62, to Boston University (6-4) on Tuesday evening at Conte Forum. The loss marked the first time the Terriers defeated the Eagles since Jan. 30, 1990.
Junior Kerri Shields led BC with 14 points. Sophomore Tiffany Ruffin added to the offensive effort with 13 points, while sophomores Kristen Doherty and Shayra Brown posted 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore Katie Zenevitch rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Eagles with 10 points. She also led BC on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds.
BC recorded it strongest half of shooting so far this season, hitting 56.5 percent of its shots from the field in the first half. The Eagles were a perfect 8-for-8 on free throws in the first half and finished the game shooting 88.2 percent from the line.
Boston College struck first in the game, as Doherty hit a layup to spark a 6-0 run by the Eagles. The Terriers quickly retaliated with back-to-back threes, but Shields made a long three to give BC a 9-6 lead with 16:52 to play in the half. BU took its first least of the game on a bucket from the paint by Caroline Stewart, but BC scored seven unanswered points to take a 16-10 advantage. With 13:18 to play in the half, Shields fed a direct pass to Doherty in the paint for the layup to make it an 18-12 game.
The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes, with BC slightly outscoring the Terriers, 10-9, thanks to a jumper from beyond the arc from Ruffin, giving BC a 28-21 lead with 7:47 left in the half. BU used an 8-2 run, capped by a three-point jumper from Chantell Alford to tie the game at 30 with 4:28 to play in the half. Doherty nailed a fade-away jumper and Ruffin scored a bucket of her own, but the Terriers were able to tie the game at 34 on a three-pointer from Mo Moran. Freshman Deidra Smith went 2-for-2 from the line before Ruffin sunk another bucket to send the Eagles to the locker room with a slim lead, up 38-37.
The Terriers attacked quickly coming out of halftime, but the Eagles regained momentum with a three from Shields and a jumper from Brown to take a 43-39 lead with 18:21 to go. BU scored four unanswered points to tie the game at 43, but Ruffin put the Eagles back on top by connecting on two free throws with just under 16 minutes left. Alford hit an uncontested three and Kristen Sims made a jumper to give BU a 51-46 lead. BU would hold onto the lead, using a 10-6 run to pull away and never look back, taking a 61-52 lead with seven and a half minutes to go. Both team scored 10 points apiece in the final minutes of play, as the Terriers walked away with the 70-62 victory.
