AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Steven Whitney netted a power-play goal at 5:15 of the opening period that stood as the Eagles lone goal until the 15:34 mark of the third period as top-ranked Boston College fell to Massachusetts 4-2 before 7,622 fans in the Mullins Center.
The game was tied at 1-1 after the first and second periods before Massachusetts scored three times, including once into an empty-net with 31.2 seconds left in the game, to gain the victory, its first win over the Eagles since Nov. 28, 2008.
Steven Guzzo broke 37:02 of scoreless hockey at 4:02 of the third period to give the Minutemen a 2-1 lead and Oleg Yevenko notched the eventual gamewinner at 13:29.
BC forward Chris Kreider brought visiting BC within one goal - at 3-2 - with 4:26 left in the third period and the team enjoyed chances when it pulled junior goaltender Parker Milner in favor of an extra attacker late in the contest but Massachusetts forward T.J. Syner scored into an empty net to secure the Minutemen win.
Whitney opened the game's scoring 30 seconds into the team's first power-play opportunity. Classmate Pat Mullane and captain Tommy Cross assisted the goal, Whitney's fourth in as many games and his sixth of the season.
Massachusetts forward Michael Pereira evened the score at 1-1 at the seven-minute mark of the first and the score remained as such until early in the third period.
BC's Milner recorded 19 saves in 59:17 in the losing effort. He falls to 8-2-0 this season.
Massachusetts goaltender Kevin Boyle made 24 saves to secure the victory.
The visiting Eagles outshot Massachusetts, 26-23.

Game Notes: Massachusetts snapped BC's Hockey East win streak at 14 games. That streak dates back to Feb. 19, 2011 - at 2-1 loss at Northeastern ... sophomore forward Kevin Hayes assisted on Kreider's third-period goal to extend his scoring streak to eight games while Mullane extending his streak to seven games ... BC scored multiple power-play goals for the third straight game and is 7-for-17 (41.1 percent) in the last four games.
