Madison, Wisc. - The Boston College women's basketball team lost to Wisconsin, 58-50, at Kohls Center on Wednesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. BC (2-3) was led by Shayra Brown with 11 points, while Kristen Doherty added eight points and seven boards. Sophomore Tiffany Ruffin notched nine second half points in the loss.
After a bucket by Katie Zenevitch (nine points, five boards), Wisconsin railed off nine straight points to go up 9-2. The Eagles cut into the lead on baskets by Zenevitch and Joy Caracciolo. With 11:41 left in the first half, BC was down 11-6.
BC took the lead two minutes later by creating turnovers with the pressure defense. A Kristen Doherty steal led to an easy layup for Brown. Four points from Shields and a three-pointer by Brown gave BC a 15-13 lead.
Wisconsin came back with five consecutive points before Doherty hit a foul shot. A drive to the basket by Jade Davis gave Wisconsin a 22-16 lead with 3:49 to play in the half. Wisconsin extended the lead to 30-22 at the half when Kelly Supernaw was fouled at the buzzer behind the 3-point line. She made two of three for the Badgers.
BC shot 42 percent from the floor but was hurt by the 11 turnovers and just one offensive rebound in the half. Wisconsin shot 42.3 percent with nine turnovers and five second chance points.
To start the second half, Wisconsin maintained the lead behind a three from Taylor Wurtz (19 points). BC had a number of good looks but continually missed shots. BC had a three minute offensive drought until Fressle hit a layup off a Wisconsin turnover at 9:14. BC was down, 40-33.
After a BC turnover, Wurtz hit a driving layup and converted a foul shot to extend the Badgers lead, 43-33. Brown's second three-pointer of the night cut the Badgers lead to seven points with under five minutes to play. The two teams exchanged baskets before a 3-pointer from Lacia Gorman (nine points) put the Badgers up by 10 with three minutes to play.
Zenevitch hit a traditional three-point play with 1:48 to play and BC was down, 53-46. A Wurtz three pointer for the baseline put the Badgers up for good.
BC's next game is on Sunday, December 4 in Ohio against the Dayton Flyers. It is a 2 p.m. tip-off.
