Terre Haute, Ind. – A 12th place outing for the Boston College women’s cross country team at the NCAA Championship on Monday afternoon marked the program’s best finish in a decade. The Eagles conquered damp, windy conditions battering the field of 254 throughout the six-kilometer LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course to accumulate 347 team points.
Senior Jillian King led BC for the fourth time this season, turning in a 20:41.5 for 56th place. Freshman Liv Westphal was the Eagles’ second scorer for the third straight meet, hitting the tape in 20:52.4 for 78th. Graduate Hope Krause was clocked in 20:53.3, just four spots behind Westphal. Juniors Bridget Dahlberg and Elizabeth O’Brien completed the tally by taking 110th (21:07.4) and 138th (21:18.1), respectively. Classmates Allison Stasiuk (22:08.2) and Moira Kenny (22:20.1) also compete, but did not contribute to BC’s score.
Defending champion Sheila Reid of Villanova and Oregon’s Jordan Hasay broke away from the lead pack with about 200 meters to go. Reid out-kicked Hasay by six tenths of a second, to claim her second straight title in 19:41.2.
Georgetown, led by Emily Infeld’s 19:44.3 for fourth place overall, dethroned Villanova for the team crown. The Hoyas’ front five came were scored at 3-33-36-44-46 for a sum of 162 team points. Washington (170), Villanova (181), Florida State (189) and Oregon (281) rounded out the top five.
Northeast Region individual champion Abbey D’Agostino of Dartmouth finished in third overall in a time of 19:42.9. The Big Green did not qualify for the team competition. Regional team champ Syracuse entered the meet ranked No. 12, but finished in 17th on 401 points.
Boston College was second among ACC schools. FSU was tabbed as No. 1 in the final poll heading into the national title run, but finished in fourth. Virginia concluded the day in 20th with 466 points and NC State wound up in 23rd on 518 points.
