CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Patrick Heckmann led Boston College with 11 points while junior Matt Humphrey added 10 as the Eagles lost to Massachusetts, 82-46, Monday night in front of 4,162 at Conte Forum.
Heckmann went 9-for-12 from the foul line and connected on his first seven free throws early in the game. He also had five rebounds.
UMass had four players in double figures, led by Chaz Williams with 16 points. Freddie Riley scored 14 points while Jesse Morgan and Cady Lalanne both had 11. The Minutemen also forced 23 BC turnovers and scored 28 points off of them while BC had just three points off of 11 UMass miscues.
BC jumped out to an early 16-8 lead behind the efforts of freshmen Ryan Anderson and Heckmann. Anderson hit his first two 3-point attempts while Heckmann started the game by getting to the foul line, hitting his first seven from the charity stripe.
UMass chipped away at the lead and then seized control of the game by ending the half on a 23-6 run for a 37-26 halftime advantage. Sampson Carter started a UMass run of 10-straight points with a layup at the 11:23 mark and then a pair of 3-pointers from Morgan and Riley aided in the run.
The Minutemen went on to hit three more from beyond the arc before the half was done to push the lead to 11 points. UMass hit all five of its first-half threes in the last 10:33.
UMass continued to build on the lead in the second half and the cushion reached 19 points, 54-35, with 13:14 left in the game. The Minutemen scored eight unanswered points in a 3:28 span to get to that point, then Riley recorded five-straight points of his own to make it 62-42 with 7:55 left.
Those five points turned into a 25-4 game-ending run for the Minutemen (4-0).
BC (1-2) will travel to Anaheim for the rest of the week for three games in the 76 Classic. It opens the tournament with Saint Louis on Thanksgiving Day at 2 p.m. on ESPNU.
