M. Tennis's Muppidi Excels at Crimson Tide Invitational

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – In the last fall tournament of the season, senior Akash Muppidi played his best, winning his flight at the Crimson Tide Invitational hosted by Alabama over the weekend. The two-seed in the bracket, he tallied five victories to close out the fall.
The Trumbull, Conn., native defeated Wake Forest’s Danny Kreyman, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-4, to take the title on Oct. 30. In semifinal action, he took down Chris Simich of Louisville in two hard-fought sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Muppidi also beat Southern Mississippi’s Paulo Alvarado (7-6 (6), 0-6, 6-3) and Ball State’s Dalton Albertin (6-0, 6-3), to advance.
Muppidi paired with junior Billy Grokenberger in double action to capture two wins. The duo defeated South Alabama’s Hanno Bartsch and Blake Gregor, 8-4, and Middle Tennessee’s Marlon Brand and Cameron Dickerson, 8-5. They fell to Tulane’s Idan Mark and Joe Young, 9-7, in a close battle in the quarterfinals.
Senior Alex Skinner and junior Klaus Puestow paired up to win one match, defeating the Davidson pair of Ethan Kallick and Nicky Kunz, 8-5, before losing to Alabama’s Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taaborga, 8-2. Sophomore Jonathan Raude and freshman Matt Wagner also tallied a win against Tulane’s Theam Frenkel and Iain Sneddon, 8-4. They dropped their second match to Wake’s Davis Hopkins and Amough Prabhakar, 8-6. Senior Rob Ankner and freshman Joe Davison recorded a win after receiving a bye in the first round. They beat Tulane’s Takuma Ohash and Cedric Rutsaert, 9-7, and then fell to Alabama’s Harris Barnard and Stuart Kenyon, 8-1.
Wagner was the only other Eagles to notch a win in singles action, defeating Samford’s Garrison Laduca, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round of his draw. The newcomer fell to Virginia Tech’s Marko Lovrinovic, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
The Eagles wrapped up their fall season and return to action on Jan. 20 in a home match against Bryant University.
