Volleyball Falls to No. 25 Miami in Four Sets

Chestnut Hill, Mass. –The Boston College volleyball team was topped by No. 25 Miami on Friday night in Power Gym. The Eagles (7-14, 3-7 ACC) looked strong at certain times, but the Hurricanes (14-6, 7-3 ACC) emerged on the positive side of several long rallies to earn a four-set victory, 26-24, 25-16, 16-25, 25-16.
Senior outside hitter Tsvetelina Dureva led all players with 20 kills, adding 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. The Sofia, Bulgaria, native ranks sixth on BC’s all-time list with 13 career double-digit performances in multiple categories.
Senior Brennan Clark and freshman Courtney Castle each posted a match-high 21 digs. Clark also burned Miami for two aces, while Castle contributed nine kills, an ace and one block.
Freshman Kellie Barnum distributed a team-best 37 assists, her fifth match with at least 30.
The Canes took the first three points of the match, but a string of attacking errors enabled BC to pull even at four. Barnum began to connect with senior Mollie Kolosky and Castle, who both put a pair of kills in the books in the first set, to help the Eagles keep pace at nines. When the first of sophomore Melissa McTighe’s six kills gave BC a one point lead, Clark followed with an ace and Dureva dealt out two kills to force a timeout from the Miami bench, 13-9.
Out of the break, Dureva added four kills to help keep Miami at bay, 18-14, but two aces, a kill and error allowed the “U” to tie up the set, 18-18. The sides then went back-and-forth until Dureva’s seventh kill of the set forced another stoppage, 23-22.
The Hurricanes drew even on a kill after the timeout, but an error gave BC set-point, 24-23. The Canes answered with a block and two kills from Lane Carico to take the set, 26-24.
Boston College took the first point of the next set, but Miami found production down the middle for a .231 hitting percentage and relied on four team blocks to control the second stanza, 26-16.
Although the third set began as closely as the first, Boston College had found its rhythm. At 9-9, freshman Lauren Fields posted two aces to give the Eagles a lead they did not relinquish. Behind Dureva’s six kills on 12 swings and sophomore Alex Fitzmorris’ three kills on seven attempts, each without an error, BC put together a .364 attack to take down the Canes, 25-16, in the third.
Boston College continued its momentum into the fourth on the arms of McTighe and Dureva, but 10-5 run gave Miami the distance it needed to escape from Power Gym with the win, 25-15.
The Eagles host No. 19 Florida State on Sunday, Oct. 23, at noon.
