The Boston College women's basketball team is embarking on the second leg of the first two-game ACC road trip on Sunday, Jan. 16 against No. 25 Miami (1 p.m.). The Eagles are currently 14-3 and 1-1 in the ACC, while Miami is 17-1 and 2-0 in the conference.
BC is coming off a key win over No. 13 Maryland, 78-69, on Thursday night at the Comcast Center. Stefanie Murphy notched 17 points, while Carolyn Swords and Jaclyn Thoman added 13 points apiece. Freshman Korina Chapman provided a spark off the bench with career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (9).
Miami defeated Clemson on Friday night, 77-35, behind 29 points from Riquna Williams. The Hurricanes have won 16 consecutive games.
BC VS. MIAMI
Maryland leads the all-time series vs. BC, 9-1. BC broke into the win column last season when the Eagles defeated the Terps, 83-70, at Conte Forum on Feb. 15, 2010. Carolyn Swords had 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
MURPH'S TURF
Senior Stephanie Murphy is leading the Eagles in scoring in the month of January. The Londonderry, New Hampshire native is averaging 19 points and 9.0 rebounds a game this month. Murphy is shooting 57.7 percent from the floor , 66.7 from the three-point line and 76 percent from the foul line. Murphy sparked an 18-2 run at the start of the second half of the Maryland game with six points, including a three-pointer.
NATIONAL STATS
The Eagles are second in the ACC and fifth in the nation in scoring (84.9) and seventh in field goal percentage (48.2) ... BC is also 5th in the country in assists per game (19.6) and 18th in assist-to-turnover ratio ... The team is 29th in rebound margin ... Carolyn Swords continues to lead the country in field goal percentage (72.5%) ... Stefanie Murphy is 16th in FG% (57.5) ... Senior Jaclyn Thoman is 20th in the country in assists per game (5.7), while freshman Kristen Doherty is 11th in assist-to-turnover ratio ... Sophomore Kerri Shields is 24th in three-point field goals made per game and 60th in 3-point field goal percentage (40%).
FACES IN THE CROWD
The Eagles had a huge and loud following at the Maryland game on Thursday night. Among the family and friends watching the Eagles first win at the Comcast Center was former BC forward Kaydia Kentish and her husband Bob ... Freshman Korina Chapman is expected to have a number of family and friends at the game in Miami on Sunday. It is the closest BC plays to her hometown of Albuqueque, New Mexico.
TEAM NOTES
• In 2009-10 the Eagles scored 80 or more points seven times. This season BC has scored 80 or more points 14 times.
• BC opened the season at 11-0, the best start in program history. The 2004-05 team holds the record for winning 12 consecutive games at mid-season.
• Junior Marissa Mello is the newest member of the Eagles family. Mello, a native of Somerset, MA, played for the women's soccer team this past season and joined the basketball team in December.
• BC's bench outscored Maryland bench, 17-16. Freshman Korina Chapman had 11 points, while Tiffany Ruffin added six.
• Kerri Shields logged the most minutes played against Maryland with 34.
