COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Maryland kept firing away, and the ball kept clanging off the rim.
By the time the final buzzer mercifully sounded, the No. 13 Terrapins had missed an astounding 73 shots in a 78-69 loss to Boston College on Thursday night.
Maryland (13-3, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) went 28 for 85 from the field, including 1 for 20 from 3-point range, and made only 12 of 28 free throws. After taking an eight-point halftime lead, the Terrapins were outscored 51-34 over the final 20 minutes.
"I'm not sure what we did well in this game from an offensive end or a defensive end," coach Brenda Frese said. "We picked a tough night for everyone to have a bad night in ACC play."
Stefanie Murphy scored 17 points, Carolyn Swords and Jaclyn Thoman each had 13 for Boston College (14-3, 1-1).
The Eagles opened the second half with an 18-2 run to go up 45-37, and Maryland never recovered.
"We really tightened up on defense and getting our rebounds," Swords said. "I think we felt a lot more calm and worked the ball around. It was really nice to go out there and get off to a good start."
Boston College has won two in a row against Maryland after losing the first 10 games between the teams.
"Maryland is a fun team to play because they're so talented, so getting a good win like this really feels great," Swords said.
Lynetta Kizer had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Alyssa Thomas added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Terps. But Maryland missed as many shots (57) as Boston College attempted.
"All the credit goes to B.C.," Frese said. "They came in here and outworked us and out-toughed us. They played with a tremendous sense of pride and confidence."
Murphy scored six points and Kerri Shields chipped in with a pair of 3-pointers in the 18-2 run that brought the Eagles back from a 35-27 halftime deficit.
It was 55-47 before Maryland's Alicia DeVaughn hit a jumper and Kim Rodgers sank the Terrapins' only 3-pointer of the game. Thomas then hit a jumper, but a minute later she missed two free throws that would have given Maryland the lead.
Soon after that, Maryland forward Diandra Tchatchouang misfired on the front end of a 1-and-1. Swords then made two free throws on the opposite end to make it 59-54 with 5:18 left.
GAME NOTES
Boston College had 19 assists tonight. The Eagles have notched 15 or more assists in 15 of 17 games ... The Eagles shot 55 percent in the second half ... In the first five minutes of the second half, BC shot 7-for-8 from the floor in the final one minute of the game ... BC shot 81 percent (18-22) from the foul line, while Maryland was 12-for-28 (42%) ... BC hit 7-of-10 from the foul line ... Freshman Korina Chapman came off the bench and notched a career-high 11 point s and nine boards ... Kerri Shields had a career-high six assists in the game ... BC had seven blocks for the third time this season ... This was the Eagles first win at the Comcast Center and second win overall since BC joined the ACC.
