The Boston College women’s cross country team took sixth place in the 29 team field at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational Meet in Falcon Heights, Minn. on Saturday. Sophomore Jillian King led the Eagles with a ninth place finish in the field of 300 runners, crossing the line in 21:23.0 over the six kilometer course.
Nationally unranked Boston College put together a superb performance against eight of the top-30 teams in the country. No. 24 Arizona took the team title in the Women’s Gold Race, accumulating 76 team points. No. 18 New Mexico followed with 102 points and No. 15 Iowa State (113), No. 7 Duke (119) and No. 14 Providence (139) rounded out the top-five.
BC bested the nation’s No. 27 Penn State, No. 28 Minnesota and No. 29 Rice teams with 165 points. The Northeast Region’s ninth ranked Eagles out dueled a total of 11 squads ranked in their respective regions, including national voted getters Arizona State, Toledo and N.C. State.
“Our front-four ran exceptionally well, all coming in within 34 seconds of each other,” head coach Randy Thomas said. “That is great for such a young crew. As a team they ran very well together and I am very happy with the outcome.”
Four of Boston College’s top-five runners achieved personal records at the 6K distance. Senior Caroline King came in at 18th overall in 21:33.4, followed shortly by sophomore Elizabeth Hynes in 27th at 21:44.5, while junior Hope Krause (21:56.7) and sophomore Allison Stasiuk (22:32.8) were both tested at the 6K distance for the first time. Sophomore Elizabeth McGuirk finished in 22:50.8 and Madeline Wallace rounded out the Eagles at 22:52.9, but neither were point scorers for BC.
“Heavy rain hit the area Thursday, causing a big mess with road closures and things,” Thomas depicted. “The course was nice for the day of the meet. The race was run on a beautiful golf course over a very challenging 6K terrain and the team handled it well.”
The Griak Invitational began in 1986 and has hosted over 40,000 runners from throughout the nation in its 24 years of existence. The meet has previously called the Minnesota Invitational (1986-94) and the Norstand Invitational (1995-96), before taking the name of legendary Golden Gopher cross country coach Roy Griak in 1997.
The women’s cross country team will compete next at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. on October 9.
