Boston College hockey coach Jerry York '67 has been named one of four recipients of the 2010 Lester Patrick Trophy, according to an announcement by the National Hockey League on Thursday.
The trophy is an annual award presented for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.
Joining York as 2010 recipients are Hockey Hall of Famer Cam Neely, Boston University coach Jack Parker and AHL President David Andrews.
A prolific scorer for Boston College from 1964-65 through 1966-67, York totaled 64 goals and 134 points in 81 games. He earned first-team All-America honors as a senior. He is the second-winningest coach in NCAA history -- his 850 career victories are second only to Ron Mason's 924 -- a four-time NCAA champion and one of only two men to have coached two schools (Bowling Green and Boston College) to national championships.
After seven years at Clarkson College and 15 at Bowling Green, where he won the 1984 NCAA title, York returned to his alma mater in 1994. He has since built Boston College into a perennial power, winning seven Hockey East tournament titles and three national championships -- including the 2010 title.
York is the fifth Boston College Eagle - and third coach - to earn the award, joining John A. "Snooks" Kelley '28, honored in 1972, Len Ceglarski '51 (1990), Joe Mullen '79 (1995) and Brian Leetch '87 (2007).
The winner is selected by a committee consisting of the President of the NHL, an NHL Governor, a representative of the New York Rangers, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Builder's section, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Player's section, a member of the U. S. Hockey Hall of Fame, a member of the NHL Broadcasters' Association and a member of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Except for the League President, each member is rotated annually.
The recipients will be honored at an evening reception in Boston in late October. Further details on the event will be announced at a later date.
