Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
The Boston College volleyball team defeated Central Connecticut State University in straight set sets on Friday afternoon in the Pizzitola Sports Center at Brown Univeristy. The Eagles (6-5) turned out the second highest attack percentage of the year (.293) to take the match, 25-14, 25-21, 25-16.
Junior outside hitter Tsvetelina Dureva led the team with 20 kills on a season-high attack percentage (.368) and 10 digs, recording her fourth consecutive double-double.
"It was a great win and we were glad to get the victory," head coach Chris Campbell stated after the match. "We are still learning to be a competitive team, which means continually pushing ourselves to make good plays. We put stretches together where we were winning, but weren't necessarily playing well. We have to do a better job of using those moments to fix the things that aren't working and become a more ."
Boston College won the first set, 25-14. The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 advantage, but the Blue Devils countered with a six-point run of their own to even the score. CCSU took the lead at 9-8, but a timeout by Campbell allowed BC to regain momentum. The Maroon and Gold took control of the set from there and got the win.
BC followed up with a win in game two, 25-21. The second set started with a block by freshman middle hitter Melissa McTighe and sophomore setter Krissy Mussenden. The two sides went back-and-forth until sevens, when the Blue Devils took a slight, two-point advantage. Freshman setter Cagla Sen connected with sophomore middle hitter Krystle Higgins on a big kill to even the game at 12, but again BC fell behind. The Eagles fought back to take the lead, 17-16, and claimed the win when Dureva rocketed senior libero Kristen Baader's set to an open far corner.
The Eagles clinched the match with a win in the third, 25-16.
Boston College returns to action Saturday, Sept. 18 at noon to take on Holy Cross for the third time this season and will meet tournament host Brown University at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and video are available.
