Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
The Boston College cross country programs kicked-off the 2010 season as host of the BC Invitational in Franklin Park, Boston, Mass. on Saturday, Sept. 11. Led by senior Caroline King who paced the field with personal record of 17:14, the Eagles captured the team title with 31 points.
"It is a good start for our team," head coach Randy Thomas said. "I'm really excited we got the win. We have a good, young team and I believe our team walked away from the competition feeling good and knowing now that we have another 10 weeks to be even better."
King, a native of Scotia, N.Y., earned the second victory of her collegiate career at the meet by besting her previous record by five seconds over the five kilometer race.
"Caroline led most of the way and really won the race over the last 150-meters," Thomas said. "It was a great run for her. I think Caroline has always viewed herself as more of a track runner than a cross country runner throughout her career. She is an outstanding runner and I think winning will give her a big, emotional boost as a cross country runner."
Sophomore Elizabeth Hynes took third in a personal record time of 17:35. Junior Jillian King (fifth) ran a 17:39, senior walk-on Hope Krause (seventh) came in at 17:52 and junior Heather Garcia recorded a new PR in 18:27 (15th) to round out the top-five for Boston College.
"Lindsay Hynes was fantastic," Thomas exclaimed. "She is head and shoulders above where she was last year. Hope Krause had a great opener too. She has been a student at BC for three years, walks onto our team and really solidifies our lineup. It was a great effort from her. Last year's top-runner, Jillian King, is right where she left off and is going to have a fantastic season again."
The Eagles ran the majority of the lineup, electing to rest a handful of underclassmen.
"The meet went very well and was a great opener for our team," head coach Randy Thomas said. "Any team is only as good as the No. 5 runner and the team ran well together. The meet gave us a great idea of where we stand right now, which is well ahead of where we were this time last year. I am very excited to have had such a successful first meet."
Boston College women's cross country resumes the season at the Purple Valley Classic in Williamstown, Mass. at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September, 25.
