CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College Women's Ice Hockey program will welcome six new players to the Heights for the 2010-11 season. Head Coach Katie King is proud to introduce the new players, including five freshmen and one transfer junior.
"I am very excited about our incoming class. With a transfer in Jess Martino, who has 2 years of college experience under her belt, to our freshman who have a total of 6 medals from 2008-10 Under-18 World Championships, we have gained a group of hard workers who are determined to excel. As a group, their work ethic and desire to be great on and off the ice, will elevate our team to an even higher level. I look forward to working with these athletes for the upcoming years and see them grow as people and as athletes."
Forward Melissa Bizzari hails from Stowe, Vt. and graduated from Stowe High School in June. She played at the North American Hockey Academy (NAHA) and was captain of the NAHA White team during the 2009-10 season. During that same season, her team was the Junior Women's Hockey League (JWHL) Runner Up. Bizzari's team was the JWHL Champion in the 2008-09 season. She played for the USA U18 Select Team in 2009 and was a major contributor to the silver medal U18 World Championship Team in 2010. Melissa is a smart, two-way forward. She will wear No. 4 at BC.
Danielle Doherty, a local from Newton, Mass., played forward at Lawrence Academy where she was team captain during her senior year. She led her team to an All-League title in 2009-10. She was one of finalists for the Carlton Award given by the Boston Bruins to the top female hockey player in Massachusetts. Doherty also played for the Assabet Valley U16 Red team, which was named National Champion in 2007 and 2008. She will wear No. 19 at BC.
Meagan Mangene hails from Miller Place, N.Y. and will see time on defense and offense this season. She last played on the Little Caesar U19 club team. With fellow BC teammate, Taylor Wasylk, she was one of the captains the 2010 U18 team. Over the past three years Mangene has won two gold medals (2008, 2009) and one silver medal (2010) with U18 World Championship teams. At the 2010 World Championships she was named one of the Top Three Players for Team USA. She followed up her silver medal success by competing as the youngest member of the Over-22 team at the USA Hockey Women's National Festival in August 2010. Mangene's grandfather, Robert `Red' Mangene, graduated from BC in 1946 and was a runningback on the 1943 Orange Bowl team before coaching football at BC for two years. She will wear No. 24 at BC.
Jessica Martino is a junior transfer who comes to Boston College after spending the last two years playing defense for Cornell. The Big Red made an appearance in the Frozen Four in 2010. Martino led the defensemen at Cornell in points during her freshman year. Before college she attended Cushing Academy for a year but graduated high school from Buckingham, Browne, & Nichols. There she was captain and an ISL All League player in her junior and senior years. She also received the Coach's Cup. Both her father and brother graduated from BC. She will wear No. 26 at BC.
Amanda Movsessian, another local, comes from Woburn, Mass. and played alongside Doherty at Lawrence Academy. She also played for two years at Woburn High School prior to transferring to Lawrence. A forward, Movsessian led both teams to success. Woburn was crowned State Champion during Movsessian's time at the school, and Lawrence Academy was a New England finalist. She will wear No. 12 at BC.
Forward Taylor Wasylk comes to Boston College from Port Huron, Michigan where she attended Port Huron Northern High School for four years. Her Little Caesar's Club Team was State Champion from 2007-2010, all four years that Wasylk played. Taylor and fellow BC teammate Meagan Mangene played on the Little Caesar club team together for the 2009-10 season. Her other notable accomplishments are her gold and silver medals from the World Championships. In 2009, Wasylk was a gold medalist at the U18 World Championships with Team USA. In 2010, she was chosen to be a captain of the silver medal winning US U18 team. Taylor is a prototypical power forward. She will wear No. 9 at BC.
