The Boston College volleyball team dropped the first two matches of the regular-season Friday, August 27, falling to Holy Cross and Fordham, by a score of 3-0 in both contests. Junior Brennan Clark led the Eagles with 17 kills and 18 digs on the day.
"We did some good things," head coach Chris Campbell said, despite the losses. "We need to be doing them on a more regular basis than we are now, but we will continue to work at being more consistent and taking care of the ball on our side of the net. I was happy to see our serving and passing game improve dramatically from the first match to the second. Our ball handling will continue to improve for us as the season progresses."
BC took on Holy Cross in the first game of the 2010 Beanpot Classic. Clark recorded her first block of the year and senior Melanie Cimino added a kill to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead, but the Crusaders would take over from there and win the first set, 25-15.
In the second set, Clark went on an early service run to give BC an early lead, 5-2. The Eagles' relied heavily on senior Dani Moskitis and freshman Cagla Sen to distribute the ball. The setter found their teammates consistently in the pivotal set and paved the way for nine kills off assists. The set went back-and-forth until Holy Cross pulled away at 22-21, taking the set, 25-22.
The Eagles battled in the third, but sophomore Megan Lynch was a catalyst for the Crusaders' offense that kicked into high-gear. Boston College again recorded the first point; however Holy Cross raced out 21-11 lead. Sophomore Val Mattaliano commanded a brief service run to bring the Eagles within six, but the Crusaders finished off BC, 25-16.
BC fell in straight-sets in a highly-contested match against Fordham in the second match the day. Moskitis dished out 24 assists in the match, helping Clark and Mattaliano each establish new single-match highs for kills in their career, with nine and eight kills respectively.
"Brennan [Clark] did a nice job for us on the outside today," Campbell said. "She took a lot of swings and did well."
Each side traded points throughout the first set. With the score even at 22, the Rams' Brittany Daulton held service and finished off the Eagles, 25-22.
The second set was equally tight. Trailing 23-16, BC rallied to within two behind Sen, but a service error gave Fordham possession and Daulton once again ended the set for the win, 25-22.
The third set did not see an Eagles lead and BC collected the loss, 25-13, to finish out the first day of the Beanpot Classic.
The Eagles return to action Saturday, August 28, against Northeastern University at 12:30 p.m. in Power Gym. Live stats will be available on GameTracker.
