Madison, WI - The two-time defending Team Race National Champion Boston College Eagles were unable to defend their title for a third time this week on Lake Mendota in Madison, WI.
Boston College and St. Mary's College of Maryland were tied going into the final day of racing. The regatta leaders faced each other on the third race of the day in what was to be a must-win race for BC.
The Eagles took a strong early lead in the race and approached the leeward mark in a winning and stable 2,3,4 combination. Unfortunately, the race was abandoned and re-sailed after a delay for lack of wind.
In the rematch, it was St. Mary's jumping out early, beating Boston College off the start line. St. Mary's went on to win the race and take a two race lead into the final round of competition.
In the final round, St. Mary's lead meant any combination of two BC losses/St. Mary's wins would clinch the title . The Eagles lost their first race of three races in the round to Georgetown, while St. Mary's lost its race against Charleston. St. Mary's, however, went on to win the next race against Georgetown to win the championship.
Sailing for Boston College were junior Taylor Canfied and crews Sandy Williams, a senior, and Emily Migliaccio, a junior; junior Tyler Sinks and crews Lucy Wallace, a junior, and sophomore Laura McKenna; as well as sophomore Annie Haeger and crews Emily Massa, a sophomore, and sophomore Briana Provancha along with senior Evan Cooke.
The 2010 ICSA Coed National Championship begins on June 1 in Madison.
