CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team had its offense break out in a big way on Wednesday afternoon defeating Central Connecticut, 8-0, in five innings at Shea Field.
The win improves Boston College to 10-18 on the season, while the loss drops Central Connecticut to 11-20 for the year.
BC opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Maria Pandolfo's one-out walk started it up for the Eagles. After two singles by Lizzy Ploen and Ali Thunstom, and a Brittany Wilkins strikeout, Boston College had the bases loaded with two outs. Rene Delagrammaticas extended the inning reaching on an error by the Central Connecticut second baseman which allowed Pandolfo to score to give BC a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles would add to that lead as Dani Weir was next up after the error. She didn't waste the opportunity crushing a grand slam high over the center field fence to make the score 5-0 in favor of Boston College after two innings. Wier's home run was the 23rd of her career.
Two RBI singles by Renee Ramos and Blair Destito in the bottom of the fourth padded the Eagles lead to 8-0 after four innings. The RBI single for Ramos extends her hitting streak to six games.
This would be all the support Allison Gage (3-4) would need as she pitched a gem going four shutout innings while allowing only two hits and struck out one.
Allie Thunstrom had a nice day at the plate going 2-for-2 with two bunt singles and a run scored for the Eagles.
Boston College will play its third game in as many days tomorrow as it will hit the road to take on New England rival Providence. The game starts at 4 p.m.
