Hockey Announces 2010-11 Captains

Forward Joe Whitney will serve as captain of the 2010-11 Boston College hockey team and forward Brian Gibbons and defenseman Tommy Cross will serve as assistant captains, according to an announcement made by head coach Jerry York.
This trio was elected by a vote of their peers.
Whitney and Gibbons are now completing their junior years and will lead the team as seniors. Cross is now completing his sophomore year.
Whitney played in all 42 games during the 2009-10 season. The Reading, Mass., product registered 45 points - 17 goals and 28 assists. He earned All-Tournament Team honors at both the NCAA Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass., and the NCAA Frozen Four in Detroit, Mich. Whitney led all BC scorers with 14 points - four goals and 10 assists - in eight postseason victories.
The 5-foot-6-inch, 175-pound forward has registered 111 points - 35 goals and 76 assists - in 122 career contests.
Gibbons also played in all 42 games this winter. He registered 50 points on 16 goals and a team-high 34 assists, including 34 points - 11 goals and 23 assists - in 27 conference contests. The Braintree, Mass., product earned All-Hockey East first-team honors.
The 5-foot-8-inch, 165-pound forward has recorded 113 points - 38 goals and 75 assists - in 121 career contests.
Cross played in 38 games in 2009-10. He registered 10 points - five goals and five assists. The Simsbury, Conn., product scored two power-play goals.
A 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenseman, Cross has registered 18 points - five goals and 13 assists - in 62 career contests.
Boston College finished the season with a 29-10-3 record. It captured the 2010 NCAA national championship with a 5-0 win over Wisconsin on Saturday, April 10 at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. The Eagles won the 2010 Beanpot championship as well as the 2010 Hockey East Tournament title.

ATKINSON EARNS ALL-USCHO SECOND-TEAM ACCOLADES: Boston College sophomore forward Cam Atkinson has earned All-USCHO second-team honors. The sophomore forward played in all 42 games and registered a team-high 53 points - 30 goals and 23 assists. Atkinson recorded 34 points - 18 goals and 16 assists - in 27 conference contests and earned All-Hockey East Second-Team honors. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound forward finished the season ranked among the nation's leaders in several statistical categories - total goals (30; first), goals per game (0.71; fourth), power-play goals (11; t-sixth) and points per game (1.26; 12th). He earned NCAA Frozen Four All-Tournament Team honors after he scored three goals in victories over Miami (4/8) and Wisconsin (4/10). The Greenwich, Conn., product captured NCAA Northeast Regional Most Outstanding Player honors after stellar efforts against Alaska (3/27) and Yale (3/28); matched a career-high with four points - three goals and one assist - in a 9-7 win over the Bulldogs. He finished the season ranked second on the team with a plus-minus rating of +26.
YORK EARNS USCHO COACH OF THE YEAR ACCOLADES: Boston College head coach Jerry York, who concluded his 38th season as a head coach and his 16th at Boston College, was named USCHO.com national coach of the year. York led the Eagles to 2010 Hockey East Tournament title and national title, capturing his 850th career victory with a 5-0 win over Wisconsin in the national championship game at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. With four victories in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, he now has 33 career NCAA wins, the highest total in Division I history. At Boston College, York is 28-8 in 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Ben Smith SIGNS AMATEUR TRY-OUT AGREEMENT WITH ROCKFORD ICEHOGS: On Thursday, April 15, Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced that right wing Ben Smith has signed an amateur try-out agreement with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. The former sixth-round pick (No. 169 overall) by the Blackhawks was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Frozen Four Tournament with four points (three goals and one assist) in two games. The Avon, Conn., product finished the 2009-10 campaign with 37 points - 16 goals and 21 assists in 42 games for the Eagles. In four years with Boston College, Smith totaled 122 points - 57 goals and 65 assists - in 165 games.
