The Boston College volleyball team began a new era under new head coach Chris Campbell on Saturday, by defeating Northeastern, 4-2 in a six-set tournament.
Campbell was cautiously happy with the overall performance.
"It was a start," Campbell said. "It gave us an indication of where we are right now and helped to highlight the next steps that we have to take."
The teams played three sets in the morning then another three in the afternoon. The Eagles closed out the day on a positive note, defeating the Huskies in the afternoon frame and winning the sets by scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-13.
Sophomore middle blocker Krystle Higgins distinguished herself by helping tally 15 blocks in those sets combined with six kills.
"Krystle has the potential to have a huge impact on the game", Campbell said afterwards. "While I would like to see her make some changes in her offense, her blocking is coming along quite well."
In the morning action, the Eagles got off to a quick start by winning the first set 25-22 behind the solid attacking of sophomore outside hitter Tsvetelina Dureva. Dureva recorded a .400 hitting percentage, tallying four kills on 10 swings with no errors.
"We've been stressing the importance of hitters making good decisions of when to go for the kill and when to be conservative", commented Campbell. "Lina did a great job of that in the first set."
BC will return to action on Saturday, April 10 when it will travel to Northeastern to play in the Huskies' Spring Classic.
