CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Danny Hultzen threw 8.0 innings and struck out 12 batters to lead No. 1 Virginia past the Boston College baseball team, 7-1, Friday night at Davenport Field.
Hultzen allowed just three hits and four base runners while on the bump. He had a strikeout in every inning, including striking out the side in the second and fanning two in the sixth and seventh innings.
Senior John Spatola provided the only run for BC (7-10, 1-3 ACC) with a solo home run in the seventh inning. It was his seventh long ball of the year. Junior Mickey Wiswall added a triple and classmate Garret Smith doubled.
Senior Chris Kowalski had his best outing of the season out of the bullpen, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked two.
The Cavaliers got three runs in both the second and third innings to build a 6-0 lead. Jarrett Parker and Tyler Cannon hit consecutive doubles on the first two pitches of the second to put Virginia up 1-0. Phil Gosselin and Keith Werman finished the scoring in the inning with two out RBI singles to push the lead to 3-0.
Steven Proscia led off the third with a double down the third base line and then Parker followed suit with a double to the base of the wall in center for a run. John Hicks added an RBI single and a wild pitch provided the Cavaliers' sixth run.
Virginia added another run in the sixth on a Dan Grovatt groundout to make it 7-0.
Spatola ended the shutout bid for Hultzen when he pulled a 3-1 offering over the wall in right-center next to the 377 feet marker. It was the first homer allowed by Hultzen in five starts this season.
Gosselin and Parker both had two hits for the Cavaliers (15-3, 3-1) with both of Parker's hits being doubles. Seven different players drove in a run for Virginia.
The second game of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. and will be televised by the Regional Sports Network. The game will be replayed on NESN on Sunday at 6 p.m.
