BOSTON - Sophomore Jimmy Hayes registered one goal and two assists and junior goaltender John Muse stopped all 30 shots to lead Boston College to a 3-0 win over Vermont in the semifinals of the 26th Hockey East Tournament at TD Garden.
Freshman Chris Kreider tallied one goal and one assist and senior Ben Smith also scored for the Eagles, who have advanced to the league championship for the fifth time in six seasons and 10th time under head coach Jerry York.
Muse recorded eight saves in the first period, 13 in the second and nine in the final frame to blank Vermont for the second time in as many meetings in the Hockey East Tournament. Muse made 28 saves in a 4-0 win over the Catamounts in the 2008 league title tilt.
BC scored once in each period.
Kreider gave BC a 1-0 lead at 15:49 of the opening stanza. It marked the freshman's 14th goal of the season.
Smith scored with 7.9 seconds left in the second period, redirecting freshman Philip Samuelsson's pass past Catamount goaltender Rob Madore (30 saves), to double the Eagle lead.
Hayes, who assisted on each of the first two scores, concluded the game's scoring at 3:06 of the final stanza, one-timing Kreider's pass from behind the net for his ninth goal of the season.
BC will play Maine in the title game on Saturday, March 20 at 7 p.m.
