CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Thirteen Boston College football players, both past and present, worked out for NFL scouts on Thursday afternoon at Harvard Stadium for BC's 2010 NFL Pro Day.
The morning portion began with 31 participants from 13 local schools assembling into Harvard's strength and conditioning gym for testing in the bench press, the vertical jump and the broad jump.
When all the players had finished the testing, the athletes moved into Harvard Stadium's Bubble to show off their skills in the 40-yard dash, the three-cone drill and the shuttle run.
The players were then broken down into groups based on positions. The offensive skill players took the field first, running routes and catching passes while working on their speed and agility. Defensive players followed suit, working on their agility as well, while also focusing on reading the quarterback the play calls. Special teams finished the day by kicking field goals and practicing kickoffs.
Senior center Matt Tennant, who was invited to the 2010 NFL Combine held in Indianapolis a few weeks ago, is one of the top ranked centers in the nation and is expected to be drafted in the second or third round. He commented on the day afterwards.
"It was nice to be here and not have to run the 40-yard dash or do any of the drills," Tennant said. "It was great to be just here and cheer on my teammates."
Although he elected not to participate in the testing, Tennant was one of five players who took part in offensive-line drills toward the end of the workout.
"I was very fortunate because I had two opportunities to do the drills," Tennant said. "If I messed up on the bench press (at the NFL Combine) then I could come here and do it (if need be)."
Senior linebacker Mike McLaughlin echoed Tennant's thoughts.
"I was as tight as can be at the combine," McLaughlin said. "I was really nervous because there is such a great amount of competition. I think today was a little bit calmer and a little more relaxed. You are in your comfort zone with your teammates and we had a good time."
"I've heard from maybe 15-16 NFL teams," he said. "You get some great exposure at the combine. I talked to special teams and linebackers coaches and some of them have followed up in the past week."
The first round of the 2010 NFL Draft will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., with the second and third round scheduled for Friday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m. and rounds four through seven are set for Saturday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m.
