Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College women's basketball team stunned No. 6 Duke, 61-57, in front of 2673 fans in an ACC matchup at Conte Forum on Thursday night. It was the first time the Eagles defeated a Top 10 team since the win over No. 2 Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament on March 21, 2006. It was also the first time BC defeated Duke since joining the ACC.
"I am extremely happy for the players,'' said BC Head Coach Sylvia Crawley. "We have been in a lot of close games but we have not showed a killer instinct to close out games. I think we executed our game plan to perfection.''
Junior Carolyn Swords, who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, hit 10-for-10 from the free throw line, and eight straight in the final four minutes of the game to seal the win.
"We take pressure free throws at every practice to help us prepare for that moment in games, so I think that helped tremendously. I am just really happy that I was able come through, and help the team get a win tonight,'' said Swords, who grabbed nine boards and two steals in the win.
Senior Mickel Picco added 12 points, while junior guard Jaclyn Thoman added nine points and nine rebounds. The Eagles finished the game 20-for-21 from the free throw line.
Duke was led by senior guard Jasmine Thomas with 19 points, while Karima Christmas and Allison Vernerey each had eight points.

The Eagles opened the game on a 7-0 run as Duke missed its first four shots. The lead changed seven times in the first half. Thoman's baseline jumper tied the game at the buzzer at 30-30. BC was led by Brittanny Johnson in the half with six points, while Ayla Brown added four points and three boards.
In the second half, the Eagles took the lead for good when Stefanie Murphy (six points, eight boards, three assists) hit a jumper from the top of the key at the eight minute mark. After a turnover by Duke, Mickel Picco nailed a three-pointer from the baseline and the Eagles went up by four.

Swords' was fouled after grabbing a huge defensive rebound with 32 seconds to play. She stepped up to the line and hit two freebies giving BC a four point lead with 30 seconds to play.
