Women's Basketball Loses To Virginia Tech, 69-64

The Boston College women's basketball team lost a tough ACC matchup against Virginia Tech, 69-64, at Cassell Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles are now 14-13 and 5-7 in the ACC. Virginia Tech improved to 14-13 on the season and 3-9 in the ACC.
Junior Stefanie Murphy led the Eagles with 22 points and five rebounds, while Mickel Picco added 11 points. Freshman Kerri Shields had nine points, while Carolyn Swords had eight points and four boards in limited minutes.
Virginia Tech was led by Lindsay Briggs with 17 points, while Brittany Gordon added 14 points and 11 boards. Utahya Drye had 13 points and six boards.
The Eagles held a slip halftime lead, 31-28, behind nine points from Picco and six points and five boards from Murphy. BC shot 56 percent from the floor but could not build a lead against Virginia Tech. The Hokies stayed in the game by causing nine BC turnovers which resulted in 11 points.
In the second half the Eagles lost the lead on a Briggs jumper at 17:38. Ayla Brown (four points, eight boards) hit two free throws with 12:18 to play and BC was up by three points. Virginia Tech stormed back behind Briggs and Abby Redick as they hit six straight points to give the Hokies a six point lead at 8:18 to play.
Murphy kept BC in the game hitting shot after shot with Carolyn Swords in foul trouble throughout the second half. Murphy hit a layup at 4:34 to give BC a one point lead. Briggs hit two jumpers on the baseline giving the Hokies a three point lead. A layup by Swords at 1:31 gave BC its final lead as she would foul out with 33 seconds to play. The Hokies proceeded to nailed six foul shots to seal the victory.

• BC shot 49 percent from the floor for the game. • It was the first game BC lost the battle of the boards in the last seven games. • Stefanie Murphy has reached double-figures in points the last three games. She is also 16-for-18 from the foul line in the run. • BC is averaging 21.3 turnovers in the last three games.
