Women's Basketball Falls to NC State, 73-62

Raleigh, NC - Boston College women's basketball team dropped a key ACC game to North Carolina State, 73-62, at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, NC. BC is now 14-12 and 5-6 in the ACC, while NC State is 15-11 and 5-6 in the ACC. The Eagles will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia on to play Virginia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
Senior Brittanny Johnson led BC with 15 points, four assists and two steals, while Stefanie Murphy added 15 points. Junior Carolyn Swords had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Ayla Brown added six points, five boards and four assists.
NC State had four players in double figures including 20 points from Nikitta Gartrell with 20 points, five boards and four assists. Marissa Kastanek went 5-for-6 from the three-point line and notched 17 points for the Wolfpack.
Boston College went down 6-0 after Gartrell and Kastanek hit three-pointers to open the game. BC finally scored four minutes into the play on a layup by Swords. The Eagles offense never came alive as NC State applied pressure and BC turned the ball over 16 times in the half. NC State shot just 30 percent from the floor but 5-for-9 from the three-point line, including three from Kastanek. The Eagles would find themselves down 31-19 at the half.
NC State opened the half with a five point run by Amber White to go up 36-19. Swords hit two straight and BC was down 36-23. After a turnover by NC State, Mickel Picco hit a three-pointer to cut the Wolfpack lead to 12 points at 15:33. The Eagles chipped away and with 3:38 to play a layup by Brown cut the NC State lead to just seven points.
The Wolfpack pushed the lead to 11 points but a three-pointer by BC freshman Kerri Shields (eight points) cut the lead to eight points. The two teams exchanged baskets and BC would get as close as seven points when Brown hit another layup inside. NC State pulled away when BC started to press the Wolfpack. The press resulted in layups and four foul shots for NC State.
BC shot 54 percent from the field but committed a season-high 27 turnovers. NC State shot 41 percent but 57 percent from the three-point line. The Wolfpack also went 15-for-15 from the foul line.
Game Notes
• Ayla Brown drew a charge to increase the Eagles season team total to 12.
• The loss ties up the head-to-head series between BC and NC State at 5-5.
• BC had five blocks, including two by Stefanie Murphy and two by Ayla Brown. It was the fifth time this season BC had five blocks in a game.
