CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College alum and former field hockey player Chelsey Feole helped coach UMass-Lowell to its second Division II National Championship on December 4, 2010. UMass Lowell's last championship was in 2005.
The No. 1 River Hawks finished with a perfect 24-0 record after winning 1-0 against No. 2 Shippensburg to become the school's first undefeated National Champions. Prior to the NCAA Championship title, UMass-Lowell captured the Northeast-10 regular season and tournament championships.
The incredible season was "Coach Che's" first with the squad as one of three assistant coaches under Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk.
"Chelsey was an instrumental in our team's success this year," Coach Hlebichuk said. "Not only did she bring an enormous amount of field hockey knowledge, but brought an energy to each and every practice and game that inspired all of us, both coaches and players. We are thankful for Chelsey's dedication to the UMass Lowell Field Hockey program. After watching in her play in numerous games at Boston College, I knew she was exactly the type of player/coach that I wanted on our sideline."
"Graduating from my BC team and moving into the coaching end of field hockey this year, I was truly unsure of the emotions, sense of pride, and attachment that would come along the way at UMass Lowell," Feole said. "I can't begin to highlight just how proud and truly happy I am for those girls. They deserve every single minute of their success this year and I feel honored to have been a part of it. They really are an incredibly special group of athletes. A group I will never, ever forget."
During her time at Boston College, Feole made a lasting impact on the field hockey program. In her 2009 senior season, she led the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2005, ending her season with a record-breaking 26 goals and 64 points. She finished her career as an Eagle with 56 goals and 134 points, good for second place on the BC all-time record book in both categories.
Feole is also starting a club team in the area. More information about the team can be found on www.northeastelitefh.com.
