Fencing Teams Struggle at Brandeis Invitational

Both the men's and women's fencing teams had a disappointing outing at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday - the men dropped meets to St. John's, Brown and Yale while posting a single dual meet victory against Haverford. The women's team managed to edge Brown and Haverford, but lost to St. John's, Yale and Cornell.
"We just looked flat all day," Head Coach Syd Fadner said. "We never got the energy level up where it needs to be in order for us to do well against teams like Brown and Yale. The Cornell meet was particularly disappointing."
Several fencers had good individual results. Peter Souders was 10-1 for the day in sabre, including two big wins against perennial powerhouse St. John's and three wins against Brown.
"Peter dropped two bouts against Brown when we fenced them at MIT before Thanksgiving, so it was great to have him take all three today," said Fadner.
Souders improves his varsity record to 14-3 for the year. Patrick Riley got off to a slow start in foil, but managed to win 8 of his 12 bouts, improving to 13-5 for the season.
On the women's side, Ali Letendre went 8-3 and Anabel Young was 6-5. Both now have season records of 13-7.
The fencing team will return to action after the Christmas Break.
