Men's Tennis Ends Fall Season at Alabama Invitational

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College men's tennis team concluded its fall season at the Alabama Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 7. The Eagles competed against 19 schools from around the country, including eight programs that finished the 2010 spring season nationally ranked.
Leading BC in the tournament were junior No. 60 Akash Muppidi and freshman Michael McGinnis with 3-1 records in singles play, while the pairing of senior Brian Locklear and junior Jonathan Schroeder posted a team-best 2-1 finish in the doubles draw.
Muppidi was selected as the top seed in the Bear Bryant draw. The Trumball, Conn. native easily handled his first two opponents - defeating Johnny Grymal (Memphis), 6-2, 6-4, and Jarryd Botha (Alabama), 6-4, 6-2 - before having to fight for a three set win over Tulane's Idan Mark, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Tennessee's Mateo Fago then topped Muppidi, 6-4, 6-2, in the final round.
McGinnis fought through the Musso draw with wins over Zach Pine (Virginia Tech), 6-3, 6-2, Randal Carter (Radford), 7-5, 6-1, and Jamie Eccleton (Troy), 6-7, 6-1, 10-8, before falling to Adam Donaldson of Louisville, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
McGinnis and Muppidi were paired together in double play, but managed a 1-1 record.
Locklear and Schroeder advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles White Draw, before being knocked out by Matt Johnson and Sam Keeton of Notre Dame, 8-2. The duo had received a bye in the first round and handed Joey Proctor and James Crawford of Tennessee Tech a 9-8 loss to advance.
Schroeder played his way to a 2-2 record in the Hannah Draw. The junior defeated Joseph Dwyer, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5, and Jeshua Irazabal, 6-0, 6-2, to earn his wins. Locklear fell in both his singles matches. The Atlanta, Ga. native feel in straight sets to Leonardo Lapentti (Virginia Tech), 6-2, 6-1, but took Matt Dooley of Notre Dame to three, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
Senior Brendan Wong also collected a pair of Ws. Boston College's other top seed took out Etham Frenkel, 6-4, 6-3, and handled Brian Kelly of Notre Dame a loss, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, but fell in the semifinal to UAB's James Gardner, 7-5, 7-6.
Fellow senior Erik Kreutzer was unsuccessful in both his singles matches, falling to Sam Keaton (Notre Dame), 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, and Daniel Moser (UAB), 6-4, 6-0. However, Kreutzer and junior Alex Skinner went 1-1 as a doubles team in the White Draw. BC defeated a team from Troy, 9-8, but lost to a Notre Dame pairing, 8-4.
Freshman Jonathan Raude was paired with Wong in the Crimson Draw for the doubles competition, but the two Eagles were defeated by host Alabama, 8-3.
Raude advanced to the quarterfinals in his singles flight with a win over Mario Rolemberg of Troy, 6-2, 6-1. The Rego Park, N.Y. native was eliminated by Michael Thompson (Alabama), 6-2, 6-2.
The Boston College men's tennis team will begin its spring season with a match at Columbia on Jan. 23, 2011.
