Women's Basketball Wins Junkanoo Jam Championship

Grand Bahamas - The Boston College women's basketball team captured the Lacayan Division Championship at the Junkanoo Jam with a 83-47 victory over Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon. The Eagles improved to 6-0 on the season with the win.
Seniors Carolyn Swords had 21 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Stefanie Murphy finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double. Freshman Kristen Doherty finished with 13 points and five assists while Kerri Shields had nine points, four assists and four rebounds. Freshman Tiffany Ruffin had six assists in the win.
BC opened the second half with a 14-2 run sparked by four points apiece from Murphy and Swords. The run increased to 26-5 at the 12 minute mark in the half.
Boston College shot 49 percent for the game. The Eagles forced 17 turnovers and had 10 steals in the game.
The Eagles fell behind 7-3 early in the first half. The lead changed hands a number of times before BC slowly pulled away with 10 minutes to play in the half. The Eagles finished the half on a 9-4 run. Jaclyn Thoman's layup off a brilliant behind the back pass from Kerri Shields and a Shields layup at the buzzer gave BC a 38-25 lead at the half. Murphy and Swords each had 12 first half points to lead BC.
BC shot 44 percent in the half and had just four turnovers. BC held Sacred Heart to 33 percent from the floor with its scrambling man-to-man defense.
Game Notes: Carolyn Swords became the all-time leading rebounder in program history in the first half of the win over Seton Hall. Swords has 914 career rebounds. Holly Porter '97 held the record with 902 boards ... BC hit a season-high 11 three-pointers vs. Seton Hall. Sophomore Kerri Shields and freshman Kristen Doherty each shot four-for-10 from the arc in the game ...Stefanie Murphy earned a spot on the All-Tournament team while Carolyn Swords was named the MVP of the Tournament ... On BC's return to the Heights, the Eagles have four days to prepare for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. BC will host Penn State on Thursday, December 2 at Conte Forum (7 p.m.)
