Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
Spurred by senior leadership the Boston College volleyball team earned its first ACC win of the season with a 25-18, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, victory over Maryland. The Eagles (9-24, 1-19 ACC) turned in their highest hitting percentage (.297) in conference play this year and out-blocked the Terrapins (19-13, 10-10 ACC) 10-to-7 in order to capture their first win in 78 days.
Senior middle hitter Melanie Cimino led the Eagles with a stellar hitting percentage of .571 - the highest for BC this season - with 13 kills on 21 attempts and added a season-best four blocks.
Fourth-year outside hitters Rainey Hanley and Kristen Baader delivered career-highs of a .372 hitting percent and three blocks respectively.
Senior setter Dani Moskitis led all players with 54 assists, her highest total of the season.
"I'm really proud of the seniors to be ability to stay focused and concentrated throughout the season," Head Coach Chris Campbell said. "This win is a testament to their and the team's personal character, as well as their abilities as athletes. I'm happy we could finish on this note. We made a lot of strides this year, which wasn't always a smooth ride. Certainly this result show that we are internalizing lessons as we go and is a good indication of where we'll go in the future and what we are capable of."
The Eagles trailed early in the first set, but kept pace and drew even at 10 on a kill by junior outside hitter Tsvetelina Dureva. The Sofia, Bulgaria native charted a match-best 19 kills on a .204 hitting percentage and chimed in on two block assists.
On the next play, the Terps would go up on one of Kara Bates team-leading 12 kills, but a service error would allow BC to equalize once more.
Dureva capitalized again on a set from Moskitis and the sides traded errors to bring the score to 13-12 in favor of the home team.
Freshman Alexandra Trobbe then added one of her season-high three kills to spur a 6-2 run that would hand BC the first frame, 25-18.
Errors put the Eagles behind early and allowed Maryland to control the second set.
Playing at a three point disadvantage, Hanley put away four of her season-best eight kills and Cimino went 3-for-3 in attacks during the second game, but the Eagles were unable to surmount the Terps and fell, 25-18.
Boston College responded with a .385 attack percentage and 20 kills - its most of the year - to win the pivotal third set.
Baader capped a long rally to put BC on the board first and although Maryland would even on the next point due to an error, the Eagles pressed on for a quick 8-4 advantage on kills from Baader, Dureva and freshman middle hitter Melissa McTighe.
Maryland called a timeout to regroup, but Boston College held firm in thanks to kills from Dureva and one of McTighe's match-high five blocks.
At 13-11, BC called a timeout of its own. Out of the break, Moskitis found Dureva, Cimino, Hanley and McTighe to take four of the next five points, prompting Maryland to take another pause.
With the score 18-13, McTighe and Baader put shots away to give BC the momentum it needed to go on for the win, 25-19, in the third.
Neither team held a lead greater than three points in the fourth set.
Maryland's Mary Cushman claimed the first point with one of her 12 kills on the day. However, Dureva and Cimino responded with kills of their own to put BC in the driver's seat, 2-1.
Boston College paced the set on kills and blocks from Hanley, Cimino, McTighe and Dureva.
Following a Maryland timeout at 13-11, Bates rattled off two straight kills to even the match. The sides would go back-and-forth to 20-20, when a pair of attack errors by the Terps put BC up, 22-20.
Maryland used its final timeout to regain its footing, but Baader delivered an ace on a serve and Dureva added another kill to give BC match-point, 24-20. When Trobbe barely missed on an attack to the far-right corner, the Terrapins drew closer on an error and a block from Maddi Lee and Brittney Grove.
Tasting the victory, Moskitis connected with McTighe to give Boston College the match, 25-23.
The match concluded the 2010 Boston College volleyball season.
