Women's Hockey Preview: Dartmouth & New Hampshire

The sixth-ranked Boston College Eagles will host Dartmouth College on Wednesday,November 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Kelley Rink in Conte Forum before traveling to New Hampshire on Sunday, November 28 to face the Wildcats in a 2:00 p.m. league contest.
LAST TIME vs. DARTMOUTH (January 27, 2010)
HANOVER, N.H. - The Boston College women's hockey team fell to Dartmouth 6-3 at Thompson Arena in Hanover, N.H.
Boston College and Dartmouth played fairly evenly for the early part of the first period with both teams trading scoring opportunities. Senior Allie Thunstrom got the scoring started for the Eagles at 16:42 in the first frame with an assist from sophomore Andrea Green to give BC a 1-0 lead.
BC jumped out to a 2-0 lead very early in the second period off an unassisted goal by freshman Kristina Brown to give the Eagles some breathing room. The Big Green found its stride not long after, however, and responded with four unanswered goals to set the score at 4-2. Thunstrom gave BC one last boost before the period ended to put a shot into the back of the net with only nine seconds remaining in the frame.
The Big Green would add power-play goals at 1:42 and 10:33 of the third period to make the final score 6-3.
Freshman goalie Corinne Boyles made 36 saves on the evening as the Big Green outshot the Eagles 42-24.
LAST TIME vs. NEW HAMPSHIRE (February 21, 2010)
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's hockey team lost its final game of the regular season to No. 4 New Hampshire, 4-1 on Sunday evening at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The Wildcats powered their way through the first period, scoring three goals before the Eagles made a change at goalie, bringing in Kiera Kingston to take over between the pipes. New Hampshire held a 20-8 advantage in shots through two periods.
Allie Thunstrom got the Eagles their only goal of the game at 19:42 of the third period off assists from Danielle Welch and Shannon Webster.
Kingston made 15 saves in net after taking over for Corinne Boyles, who recorded eight saves on the night.
LAST WEEKEND
A hat trick from Kelli Stack and one a piece from Ashley Motherwell, Taylor Wasylk, and Danielle Welch secured a 6-3 win for the No. 6 Boston College women's hockey team over No. 5 Boston University on Saturday, November 20 at BU's Walter Brown Arena.
BC scored five goals to lead 5-0 through most of the second period. The Terriers scored their first goal at 15:23 in the second after Marie-Philip Poulin was able to make a charge at goal right out of the penalty box. They netted a second score with 11 minutes remaining and a third with eight to go in the third period.
Despite BU's final frame surge, BC's defense was able to hold the line and at 17:16, Welch scored BC's final goal with an assist from Katelyn Kurth to end the game 6-3.
On Sunday, November 21 the Eagles hosted the Terriers in a much different game, losing 1-0. Molly Schaus made 22 saves.
WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS
Kelli Stack and Molly Schaus were named Pure Hockey Co-Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, as announced by the Hockey East on Monday, November 22. This is Stack's second weekly honor this season, and Schaus' first.
Stack had one of her best games this season on Saturday, November 20 in the first game of a weekend series against cross town rival Boston University. She scored a hat trick - her second of the season - in the 6-3 win. Schaus recorded 24 saves on Saturday and turned away another 22 shots on Sunday for a total of 46 in the series.
FOUR NATIONS SILVER MEDALISTS
From November 9-13 the Eagles' senior captain goaltender Molly Schaus and freshman starting defender Meagan Mangene travled to St. John's, Newfoundland to compete in the Four Nations Cup as members of the U.S. Women's Select Team.
Joined by former BC women's hockey player Allie Thunstrom (BC '09), the three athletes walked away with the silver medal to add to their already remarkable hardware collections.
Team USA handled Canada, Finland, and Sweden before meeting Canada again in the championship game on November 13. The U.S. had won the previous game on November 9 3-2 in a shooutout, but it was Canada who walked away with the gold medal win a close 3-2 contest that was won on a power play goal in overtime. Schaus made an impressive 49 saves in the game to be named U.S. Player of the Game.
Schaus started in two of four games and recorded a total of 71 saves. Her 4-0 shutout over Finland was the fifth in her U.S. career.
