Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College sailing team won the Inaugural Intercollegiate Sailing Associations Match Race Championship last weekend. The Eagles won the match race 3-0 over St. Mary's in the final at the US Merchant Marine Academy.
BC senior Taylor Canfield , sailing with senior Danny Bloomstine, sophomore Ryan Mullins, senior Briana Provancha , and senior Tyler Sinks, represented the Eagles in the win.
The Eagles began the event with a 3-1 win/loss record in the preliminary round. After tie-breaking methods were applied, their one loss in the first round prevented the Eagles from earning an automatic berth in the quarterfinals. Strong sailing in the second round and a 4-1 win/loss record qualified Boston College for a spot in the quarterfinals and a shot at the National title.
BC defeated the home team, King's Point, 2-0. Canfield and the Eagles to sailed well in the semifinals, beating Tulane, 2-0, and advancing BC to the Finals against rivals St. Mary's College.
In the opening race, St. Mary's appeared to have the advantage off the start line, but BC quickly showed it had a speed advantage, passing St. Mary's early on the first leg and going on to win the first race comfortably.
The second race saw the Eagles take an early lead with St. Mary's close behind. At the final mark rounding, the race was a dead heat but the BC's excellent crew work and a perfect spinnaker set allowed the team to sail past St. Mary's and hang on for the win and a two race lead.
In the final race, the Eagles speed advantage was evident once again as they led all around the race course and sailed to a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's and the 2010 ISCA Match Race National Championship win.
This Championship was formerly the Sloop National Championship in the spring of 2010, which Boston College won. The ICSA changed the Sloop National format to match racing this year.
