BC Fencers Open Dual Meet Season

Boston College Fencing started the dual meet season with a strong showing at MIT on Saturday -- the women were 5-1 and the men 4-1 in Northeast Fencing Conference action.
In varsity matches the women's team posted wins over a much-improved Wellesley team and soundly defeated Sacred Heart while losing to Brown.
Olivia Curry, fresh off her bronze medal performance at the Fall Invitational, was 17-1 for the day, an exceptional performance. Squad mate Molly Wolfe was 13-5, including a 7-2 varsity record. As a squad, women's sabre was undefeated.
Senior Jennifer Colacino was 16-2 in foil, and freshman Anabel Young 10-2 in epee.
"The competitive energy the team displayed today makes me very optimistic about the season. For Olivia to be so consistent all day shows how far she's come since last season," Head Coach Syd Fadner said. "And Molly's performance was a milestone. And we had strong showings from the epee and foil squads. It was a great team effort, with everyone contributing."
In varsity matches the men's team beat Brown 14-13 while dropping a nail-biter to Sacred Heart 13-14. Both results are an improvement over last season when the men fell to Brown 11-16 and 10-17 and to Sacred Heart 10-17.
"We're seeing the impact of a strong freshman class who are not only having success on the strip, but are energizing the upperclassmen," Fadner said.
Freshmen Kendall Harmeyer in epee and Patrick Riley in foil were each 8-2 overall, while Devin Midgley went 6-5 in sabre.
Senior Sjur Hoftun was 5-1 in varsity foil matches, going undefeated against Brown and contributing two big wins in the Sacred Heart meet.
