Coral Gables, Fla. - The Boston College volleyball team was defeated by the University of Miami, 25-13, 25-14, 25-16, on Friday night in Coral Gables, Fla. Freshman Cagla Sen led the Eagles (8-23, 0-18 ACC) with her fourth double-double of the season, racking up 24 assists and 10 digs.
Senior Kristen Baader recorded 11 digs on the evening to jump into sixth place on the BC all-time digs list with 1,014. The outside hitter also added five kills and a block assist.
Freshman middle Melissa McTighe hit .333 with five kills on 15 attempts, adding a match-high two block assists.
Lane Carico posted a double-double of her own - 18 kills on .405 hitting percentage and 13 digs - to led Miami (21-8, 11-7 ACC) to the straight set victory.
The Hurricanes jumped out to a 13-5 lead early, riding Carico who came out absolutely on fire. The junior recorded eight of her kills on 13 attempts with no errors in the initial frame.
Following a timeout, the Canes continued to push the score to 18-7, forcing another stoppage. Although junior Tsvetelina Dureva would put away six kills in game one, the Eagles fell, 25-13, in game one.
Carico used a tip shot to claim the first point of the second set for Miami. An ace gave them a 2-0 advantage, but a kill down the middle from McTighe earned the Eagles their first point of the game.
Baader and fellow senior Melanie Cimino each notched two kills as the two sides traded points to 10-10. At this point, Miami went on a five point run behind three kills from Carico. A third kill from Baader halted the Canes' momentum at 15-11.
As Miami continued to press, sophomore Val Mattaliano and senior Rainey Hanley added kills, but four late attacking errors proved critical for the Eagles who dropped the second game 25-14.
Miami sent a shot down the middle to take the first point and pushed its lead to 5-0 to start the third. A serve sent long gave the Eagles their first point of the game and BC added one more on an error from Carico before committing a service error of its own to surrender the serve.
At 7-2, Hanley and McTighe combined for a block and Baader contributed a kill to help BC progress its score. Both sides traded points to 9-6, but errors by the Eagles would allow Miami to take control of the third game and go on to win 25-16.
Boston College will continue its road trip to the Sunshine State with a meeting against Florida State on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Florida.
