NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Senior alternate captain Brian Gibbons registered two points - one goal and one assist - to lead second-ranked Boston College, but host Merrimack twice established two-goal leads and held for a 4-2 Hockey East victory before a sellout crowd of 2,772 fans at Lawler Arena.
BC junior forward Cam Atkinson brought the visiting Eagles within one goal - at 3-2 - at 2:48 of the third period but it would only last 6:48 as Merrimack junior Ryan Flanigan regained a two-goal advantage at 9:36 and the Warriors held for the 4-2 victory.
After Merrimack junior Jesse Todd and Gibbons traded power play goals in the first period (at 4:14 and 9:50, respectively), Brendan Ellis tallied his first collegiate goal at 15:01 of the first period and Joe Cucci doubled the lead - at 3-1 - early in the middle stanza.
BC finished with a 33-32 edge in shots, including a margin of 16-12 advantage in the game's final frame. Merrimack finished 2-for-6 in power-play situations.
Merrimack junior goalkeeper Joe Cannata recorded 31 saves in the win. He improves to 2-1-2. Boston College sophomore goalkeeper Parker Milner recorded 28 saves in 58:30. Tonight's appearance marked Milner's second of the season. He falls to 1-1-0.
