The Boston College volleyball team was defeated by Duke University, 3-1, on Saturday, October 2, in Durham, N.C. Junior outside hitter Tsvetelina Dureva led the Eagles (8-10, 0-5 ACC) with a match-high 14 kills on .345 hitting percentage, adding nine digs and a pair of block assists in the losing effort.
Duke (13-2, 5-0 ACC) remained the top team in the ACC behind a double-double from Kellie Catanach, who delivered 10 digs and 46 assists for an offense that hit .386 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Freshman middle hitter Melissa McTighe led all players with five blocks, as did senior libero Kristen Baader with 26 digs.
Freshman Cagla Sen dished out career-best 27 assists in her second game back from injury and sophomore Krystle Higgins displayed her best attacking performance (.385) in three weeks.
The Blue Devils took the first set, 25-12. Duke marched out to a commanding, 9-3, lead. Although the Eagles would pull to with four, 12-8, the Blue Devils used a .571 hitting percentage to walk away with the win.
BC evened the match with a win in the second, 25-22. Duke took the first point, but the Eagles kept pace with a kill from Dureva and took the lead on a block from McTighe. BC would not relinquish the advantage, championed by Dureva's .700 second-set hitting percentage.
Duke won the third game, 25-11, behind four kills and two blocks from preseason All-ACC selection Becci Burling.
The Eagles appeared to be in control of the fourth set, up 13-7 on a seven serve rally from Higgins, but the Blue Devils called timeout to regroup and went on an 18-1 run to seal the victory, 25-14.
Boston College will resume play when Virginia comes to The Heights on Friday, October 8, at 7 p.m. against Virginia.
