Clemson, S.C. -
The Boston College volleyball team was topped by Clemson, 3-0, Saturday night in Jervey Gym. Sophomore Val Mattaliano posted a match-high 10 kills on .208 hitting percentage and seven digs to lead the Eagles (8-16, 0-11 ACC) on the road.
Alexa Rand charged Clemson (14-8, 5-6 ACC) with 13.5 points off seven kills on .700 hitting percentage and nine total blocks, two solo and seven assisted.
The Eagles started the match off with a 5-1. After a point from Clemson, freshman Melissa McTighe and junior Tsvetelina Dureva combined on a block, before Dureva put away two straight attacks. An attack error by the Tigers and a kill from freshman setter Cagla Sen capped the run. Clemson put two straight points on the board, but BC responded with two of its own from sophomore Krystle Higgins and Mattaliano. Junior Brennan Clark would score again for the Eagles, but Clemson drew even at nine.
From there both sides battled to 14-14, at which point the Tiger took a three point lead off of errors from BC. McTighe posted a block and a kill by Higgins pulled the Eagles within one, but again Clemson went up by three, 19-16.
The two sides traded points off errors, before Higgins and Mattaliano put away a pair of shots to bring the score to 20-19. Kills were made on both sides of the net, but the Tigers recorded five of the last six points to take the first set, 25-21.
Clemson raced out to an 11-5 lead in the second game. Two kills and an ace from Dureva complemented a pair of Tiger errors to make up the scoring for BC.
After a Boston College timeout, Clemson ran away with the set, 25-11, with the Eagles points coming from Higgins, McTighe, Dureva and another pair of Tiger errors.
In the third, the Eagles garnered the first two points, however Clemson drew even. Mattaliano put BC on top, but Clemson put score three straight to take a lead it would not relinquish.
The Tigers stretched their lead to 12-7, before Boston College called a timeout. The sides traded points to 15-10, before a kill from McTighe, a Tiger error and a block by Higgins and Dureva drew the Eagles to within, 16-13, but Clemson sealed the match with a win, 25-15.
Boston College will resume action in on Friday, October 29, with its annual Dig for a Cure event against North Carolina at 7:00 p.m. in Power Gym.
