The Boston College volleyball team was defeated by the University of Miami, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in Power Gymnasium. Freshman Melissa McTighe led the Eagles (8-14, 0-9 ACC) with .333 hitting percentage and one block.
Senior Kristen Baader led all players with 16 digs and sophomore Krystle Higgins posted a match-high three blocks.
The Hurricanes (15-5, 5-4 ACC) were led by a double-double from junior Lane Carico, 11 kills and 15 digs, and 10 kills on .500 hitting percentage form classmate Christine Williamson.
Miami won the first set, 25-19, behind eight kills from Carico.
McTighe, who was a perfect four-for-four in the initial game, put the Eagles out front on the first play of the match and a pair of Miami errors allowed BC to possess an early advantage, 3-0. The Hurricanes would draw even at six all and the two sides traded points to 8-8 with kills from sophomore Val Mattaliano and junior Tsvetelina Dureva keeping pace for the Eagles. Attacking errors would put BC behind on the following plays and Carico would record six kills en route to a first set win for Miami.
Errors hurt BC in game two also, causing the Eagles to drop the set, 25-12. This time it was the Hurricanes jumped out to a three point lead. As Miami steadied their lead, again the Eagles relied on kills from Dureva and Mattaliano to stay close. After a kill from junior Brennan Clark brought BC within two, 10-8, Miami would pull away for the win.
Following suit, the third game began with the sides going point-for-point. At five all, two service aces put Miami ahead for good and the Hurricanes took the third set, 25-15.
Boston College resumes action when it travels to play Georgia Tech on Friday, October 22, at 7 p.m.
