The Boston College women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss, third of the season in a 2-1 match against ACC foe Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Newton Soccer Field. Boston College is now 9-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech improved to 8-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference.
The Eagles lone goal was scored by Kristen Mewis at the 51 minute mark of the match. Mewis dribbled through a number of Virginia Tech defenders and ripped a left-footed shot from 21 yards out into the far corner of the goal. It was Mewis' eighth goal of the season, a new career high.
Mewis' goal tied the game at 1-1 in the second half. Just minutes after her goal, Mewis had a point blank shot on the Virginia Tech goalkeeper Dayle Colpits (six saves). With two defenders on her side, Mewis squeezed out a shot that Colpits easily handled.
Virginia Tech took the lead at the 75 minute mark when Brittany Michels threaded a pass through two Eagles defenders to Ashley Manning. Manning, who had just entered the game, took two dribbles and was one-on-one with BC goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni. Manning went far post on the shot to give Virginia Tech a 2-1 lead.
Mastorianni, who finished with six saves, made a diving save minutes later when Marika Gray broke in alone. Mastroianni smothered the loose ball before Gray could dribble by the Eagles keeper.
Virginia Tech's first goal was scored by Brittany Michels when she knocked in a cross from Jennifer Harvey. Michels scored at 21:01 in the first half.
Boston College finished the game with a 16-12 edge in shots. Mewis led the Eagles offense with 10 shots, five on goal. BC had a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
Game Notes:
Boston College's next match is Sunday, October 17 as the Eagles host Clemson at 1 p.m. ... This is the first time BC has lost two consecutive home matches since October 2008 (FSU, UNC) ... Kristen Mewis extended her point scoring streak to 11 games. The Eagles midfielder set a new career-high of 10 shots in the match.
