Women's Basketball Defeats Miami, 72-64

The Boston College women's basketball team used a balanced attack at the Eagles defeated Miami, 72-64, in an ACC game in front of 3019 fans at Conte Forum on Sunday afternoon. Boston College is now 12-10 on the season and 3-4 in the ACC. Miami dropped to 14-7 overall and 2-5 in the ACC.
Senior Brittanny Johnson led the Eagles with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists, whole Carolyn Swords notched 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Mickel Picco added 12 points, six rebounds and had six assists, while junior Stefanie Murphy added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Boston College used a 16-4 run in the final six minutes of the first half, sparked by two three-pointers apiece from Johnson and freshman Kerri Shields (3-for-4 from the field, nine points). The run began when Johnson hit a three-pointer at 3:57 in the half. Shields would hit two consecutive three's in the final two minutes, while Johnson's three with 39 seconds in the half gave BC a nine point lead. After two foul shots by Miami's Diane Barnes, BC led at the half, 33-26.
The Eagles extended the lead to 15 points early in the second half on six straight points behind layups by Murphy, Jaclyn Thoman (four points, six assists) and Swords. Miami had an uphill battle the rest of the half. Miami made a run with eight minutes to play and Swords on the bench with three fouls. The Hurricanes cut the BC lead to five points but Picco's only three-pointer of the game at 6:53 extended the lead to eight points.
Miami chose to foul in the final two minute of play. The Eagles proceeded to hit 10-of-11 from the line, including Johnson going 4-for-4, to seal the win.
Boston College shot 44 percent from the floor, including 48 percent from the floor in the second half. Despite giving up 13 offensive rebounds, BC won the battle of the boards, 41-40. Miami was led offensively by Diane Barnes with 15 points and Shenise Johnson added 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Riquna Williams notched 11 points in the loss.
Game Notes
• Boston College used a 16-4 run starting at the 6:43 mark of the first half to take a 33-26 lead going into halftime. The Eagles hit four three-pointer in the run two by senior Brittanny Johnson, and two by freshman Kerri Shields.
• Junior center Carolyn Swords led BC in the first half with 10 points and six rebounds.
• With her 10 points in the first half Swords moved into 10th place on the all-time Boston College scoring list passing Kathrin Ress (2003-07) with 1,300 points.
• Senior guard Mickel Picco tied her career-high with six assists in the win.
• Picco also tied her season-high in rebounds with six in the game.
• All 10 BC players saw action in the game.
• With the win Boston College has now extended its winning streak over Miami to seven games.
• The Eagles are now 3-0 in ACC play when they score 70 points or more.
