CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team will finally be able to take the court inside its home gym this weekend as it plays host to a two-day, six-match tournament. Despite it being the first weekend where the team does not have to travel, the Eagles have not found the pressure of always playing inside an unfamiliar building to be too daunting.
Although they are still a long way from season's end, BC can certainly find excitement and take pride in the fact that it has almost topped their total number of wins from 2008, and it is only mid-September. Since dropping the opening match to Buffalo, the team has strung together an impressive streak of seven consecutive wins to launch them to fourth in the ACC standings with a .875 winning percentage.
This weekend should prove to be much of the same for Head Coach Andrea Leonard and the Eagles, as they prepare to host their first home match of the season against Connecticut on Friday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. Boston College will also welcome Hartford and Rhode Island to the Heights this weekend.
The Eagles will continue to look to sophomore Mollie Kolosky to provide the offensive firepower that has been too much to handle for opponents thus far this year. After only eight matches, Kolosky leads the Eagles with 113 kills, 3.53 kills per set and a .385 hitting percentage. She currently sits in fourth place in kills in the ACC and is third in hitting percentage.
In terms of preparation for Friday, Kolosky focused on the team's excitement going into the weekend.
"I'm really looking forward to having a home crowd and being able to represent BC in a positive way," she said. "I think if we take care of our side of the net then there is nothing to worry about. We are prepared."
Additionally, senior Taylor Williams has continued to pick right up where she left off in 2008, blasting 71 kills and averaging 2.22 kills per set, both of which are good enough for second on the team in each category. Additionally, freshman Krissy Mussenden has been a terrific addition to the squad this year, as her 309 assists puts her in fifth place in the conference and sophomore Tsvetelina Dureva's 15 service aces gives her the second highest total in the ACC.
The defense has continued to look strong during each match thus far. Sophomore Brennan Clark is third in the ACC with 146 digs on the season and junior Melanie Cimino's 29 total blocks currently leads the team in that category.
Two more victories would give the Eagles nine on the season, one more than their total number from 2008. Already the team is off to its best start since 2003 when the team went 6-2 after their first eight matches. Boston College will attempt to build on their great start when they match up against Connecticut on Friday and then return to the Power Gym on Saturday to take on Hartford at noon and Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m.
