Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College women's basketball team will take part in the fourth annual Maggie Dixon Classic on Sunday, Dec. 13 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Eagles are scheduled to face Baylor University in the first game of a doubleheader while the second game will pit Tennessee against Rutgers.
It will be the first meeting between Boston College and Baylor. Baylor finished the season ranked fifth last season and advanced to the regional semifinals to Louisville in the NCAA Tournament. Baylor has one of the most talked about incoming freshman - Brittney Griner - on the roster. BC advanced to the WNIT Final Four last season and posted a 23-12 record under first year coach Sylvia Crawley. The Eagles return five starters including the two post players in 6-foot-6 Carolyn Swords and 6-foot-4 Stefanie Murphy.
On April 6, 2006, the women's basketball community lost Maggie Dixon, who died of arrhythmia, probably caused by an enlarged heart. Her death came three weeks after her first season as a head coach at the United State Military Academy. The Black Knights played in their first Patriot League Championship and Dixon led her team to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. During her stint at Army Dixon, through her passion, energy and love for the female cadets not only inspired the West Point community but also touched the entire nation.
The inaugural Maggie Dixon Classic was held at Army in 2006 - a men's and women's doubleheader. Pitt's men's team - coached by Maggie's brother Jamie, beat Western Michigan and Ohio State routed Army.
