Baseball's Comeback Stuns NC State
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Former Boston College pitcher Joe Martinez was named to the San Francisco Giants 25-man Opening Day roster, announced April 3 by the organization. In addition, Martinez earned the club's Harry S. Jordan Award for his efforts during Spring Training.
Martinez, who was competing for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, will start the season serving the long relief role. Martinez earned his spot with the Giants in the spring, recording a 1.72 ERA in his last five games.
The Giants' Jordan Award, which is voted on by players, coaches and the training staff, recognizes the player in his first Major League camp whose performance and dedication in Spring Training best exemplifies the franchise's spirit.
Martinez had an ERA of 3.57 in seven games - five starts - in the Cactus League. He worked 22.2 innings and allowed 12 runs - nine earned - while striking out 14 and walking six.
Martinez was selected in the 12th round of the 2005 draft by the Giants. San Francisco opens its 2009 season on Tuesday vs. Milwaukee at AT&T Park.
Chris Lambert, another former BC pitcher, is currently listed on the 40-man roster for the Detroit Tigers. Lambert started three games late last season for Detroit and appeared in a total of eight contests. He had an ERA of 5.66 in 20.2 innings pitched in 2008.
Lambert was the 19th overall pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 draft.
