Women's Lacrosse Loses to Duke 16-7 in first round of ACC's

Blacksburg, Va. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team lost to Duke University 16-7 in the opening round of the 2009 ACC Tournament hosted by Virginia Tech on Thursday afternoon.
The loss gives the Eagles a 9-8 record and removes them from the tournament. In the early game, Virginia knocked Virginia Tech out of the running with a 13-5 victory over the Hokies.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring at 27:56 in the first period with a goal by Tewaarton Trophy nominee Carolyn Davis, the Eagles responded less than a minute later with a tally by senior Maura Mahoney to even the score less than three minutes into the opening frame. A BC turnover off the ensuing draw control won by senior Margot Spatola resulted in a groundball pickup for Duke that led to a goal at 26:03 for a 2-1 Blue Devils led.
The Eagles had an opportunity to tie the game on a free position shot at 22:38 but were stopped by Duke goalkeeper Kim Imbesi.
Duke added a third goal at 22:12 in the frame to give them a two goal lead, but the Eagles managed to get one back on a free position shot by Kristin Igoe at 21:13.
Ten minutes of play elapsed before the scoreboard saw action again, as Duke regained their two goal lead at 10:21 with a 4-2 score. Davis added another tally and Emma Hamm added two late period goals to send the teams into halftime with the Blue Devils leading 7-2.
The Eagles put 18 shots on net to Duke's 12, and senior keeper Katie Monaghan made 4 saves in the period.
In the second half Duke once again opening the scoring in the 27th minute, notching a goal at 27:06 and adding two more in quick succession at 25:51 and 24:59 for a 10-2 lead.
Igoe opened the scoring for the Eagles with her second converted free position shot of the day at 23:33. The Eagles won the following draw control, but a turnover in the attacking zone led to Duke's 11th goal of the game.
Junior Lauren Costello added her first goal of the contest at 22:15 in the second half and Mahoney added her second of the day at 17:16 to make it 11-5. Duke responded with a tally 16:26 to push the scored the 12-5 in their favor with just over half a period to play.
Duke scored their first free position goal of the game at 12:56 prompting the Eagles to make a goalie substitution and replace Monaghan with freshman goalkeeper Catharine Conway, it was Conway's first ACC action of the season.
The Blue Devils pressured Conway earlier, netting a goal at 12:28 to increase their lead to 14-5. Duke continued to pressure scoring at 7:56 to give them a 10 goal lead heading into the closing minutes.
The Eagles added a goal at 2:45 by Costello to try and mount a comeback, but the Blue Devils added a tally at 1:55 to regain their ten goal lead.
Mahoney added her third goal of the game with seven seconds remaining, but the Blue Devils took their second victory from the Eagles in two weeks with a 16-7 final score.
Duke moves on to face North Carolina in the semifinals, the Eagles return to Chestnut Hill for their final game of the season on April 30 at 4:30 p.m. against Harvard.
