The Eagles' Coed Sailing Team defended their Conference Championship this weekend on their home waters of Dorchester Bay. The win qualifies the team for the first round of the Coed National Championship. This is the third consecutive Conference title for the coed squad since their first-ever championship win in 2007. Racing was extremely close all weekend. Eighteen teams were fighting not only for the championship, but for eight berths at the first round of the National Championship. After Brian Kamilar '09 and Andrew Schneider '09 completed their last race in A division, BC was two points behind Roger Williams with one B division race to go. Tyler Sinks '11 and Lauren Gillooly '09 attempted to control Roger Williams off the start line, but Roger Williams escaped and got the better start. Sinks/Gillooly gave chase up the beat and their boat speed got them to within one boat length of Roger Williams at the top mark. Downwind, Sinks/Gillooly covered and passed - rounding the bottom mark exactly two boats ahead of Roger Williams. From there, the pair extended, sailing on to third in the race with Roger Williams in fifth - enough for BC to secure the Championship by two points.
The BC Women's Team looks to defend their Conference Championship this week at the University of Vermont. Martha Pitt '09/Lily Beck '09 and Leigh Kempton '09/Carrie Amarante '09 took second place at last weekend's Wick/Shrew regatta at Coast Guard. The event was a preview of nationals, with twelve of the top fifteen schools sailing - including each of the top ten teams. BC sat in fourth place after Saturday's racing, but rallied on Sunday to finish second.
