Boston College is currently 23-11 after capturing a 65-56 victory over Georgetown in the fourth round of the WNIT on Sunday, March 29. Today's game against South Florida will be the third consecutive Big East team the Eagles have met in the WNIT.
Boston College improved to 4-1 overall in the WNIT Tournament. The Eagles received a buy in the first round of the WNIT Tournamen this season.
In the second round game Boston College defeated cross-town rival Boston University, 68-53. In the third round game, BC defeated former Big East foe, St. John's, 68-64. The Eagles had to meet up with another Big East foe as BC defeated Georgetown on March 29 to advance to the WNIT Final Four.
SCOUTING SOUTH FLORIDA
• The Bulls are currently 25-10. USF finished the Big East regular season with an 8-8 record. The Bulls pulled off victories over Rutgers (59-56) on Jan. 31, DePaul on Feb. 24 (76-69) and Villanova on March 2 (52-50).
• Senior guard Shantia Grace leads the Bulls in scoring with a 14.8 ppg. average. She is also averaging 4.7 assists a game. She earned All-Big East Conferenc first team honors.
• Junior guard Janae Stokes is averaging 12.4 points a game, while Senior center Jessica Lawson is scoring 10.6 points a game and grabs 6.6 rebounds a game.
LAST TIME OUT
Boston College captured a 65-56 victory over the Georgetown on Sunday, March 29 to advance to the WNIT Final Four. The Eagles were led by Carolyn Swords with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ayla Brown added 11 points and eight rebounds and Stefanie Murphy notched 10 points and six rebounds.
Boston College went up 29-23 at the half behind eight points from Swords and Murphy. The Eagles shot only 37.5 percent but had 10 offensive rebounds.
In the second half, BC extended the lead to 12 points in the first three minutes off of four layups from Swords, Jaclyn Thoman and Murphy. Swords had five points in the first four minutes of action and BC never relinquished the lead. At 3:20 Georgetown cut the lead to three points, but Brown hit a layup to extend the lead to five points. The Eagles would then hit 10 of 11 foul shots in the final two minutes of play to seal the victory.
PLAYER NOTES
• Senior Corey Rusin did not play against Georgetown but is expected to return tonight. Rusin is nursing a sprained ankle.
• Three players - Mickel Picco, Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy - are the only three players to have started all 34 games this season.
• Mickel Picco has 82 three's this season. The single season record is held by Cal Bouchard when she hit 96 in the 1999-2000 season.
• Sophomore Carolyn Swords now holds the single season record for most rebounds. She currently has 302. The record was held by Brooke Queenan who grabbed 266 in the 2005-06 seeason.
• This is the first Boston College team to continue to play in the month of April. The 2003 BC team played on March 30, 2003 when the Eagles were bumped from the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 16 by UConn.
MURPHY'S LAW
Sophomore Stefanie Murphy is thriving in the post season. The Eagles forward has notched two double-doubles in the Eagles three WNIT games.
Murphy is averaging 14.7 points and nine rebounds in three games. She went 5-for-7 and had 10 points vs. Georgetown. Against St. John's, Murphy shot 10-for-13 from the field and finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three blocks and four assists. In the second round game against Boston University, Murphy finished the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
MARCH MAYHEM
In the month of March, the Eagles are 5-1. BC's only loss came against then ranked Florida State in the quarterfinal of the ACC Tournament on March 6.
In March, Boston College is averaging 67.7 points a game and shooting 44 percent from the floor. Carolyn Swords leads the Eagles with a 15.5 ppg. while Stefanie Murphy is second with a 12.3 ppg. average. Off the bench, Lauren Whitehurst is averaging 4.2 pts and 5.3 rebounds a game.
