Durham, N.H. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team lost in the Hockey East Championship game 2-1 to the University of New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon.
The win guarantees the Wildcats a spot in the NCAA regional's next weekend, the Eagles will find out where they place in the national landscape during the selection show tonight at 6 p.m.
The Eagles won the opening face off, but couldn't clear the puck out the neutral zone and both teams went into a defensive lockdown to start the game. Senior Stephanie Olchowski showed why the Eagles possess the No. 1 defense in the league when she broke up an odd-man rush with a poke check, allowing sophomore Katelyn Kurth to take control of the puck and clear it from the BC zone. The first shot of the game, courtesy of the UNH, did not come until 4:30 into the frame.
The Wildcats struck first at 10:40 with a cycle around the net to the right face off circle where defenseman Kacey Bellamy fired a wrister that hit the back of the net for a 1-0 New Hampshire lead.
The Eagles got into penalty trouble late in the first period, ending up on the wrong end of a 5-on-3 penalty kill that resulted in a UNH goal at 14:00 in the frame. Molly Schaus made several saves and turned away two rebounded shots before the Wildcats managed to sneak the puck across the crease for a 2-0 lead.
At the end of the first period New Hampshire led the Eagles in shots 10-2.
The Eagles received their first power play opportunity three minutes into the second frame and appeared to score a goal that was disallowed on a high-sticking call.
BC killed off a New Hampshire power play in the middle of the frame and followed up with power play of their own but could not convert on the opportunity to keep the score knotted at 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats to close out the second.
The Eagles turned up the heat in the middle stanza, outshooting New Hampshire 11-7.
At 13:22 in the third period Meghan Fardelmann swooped in on a UNH clear off of Becky Zavisza's initial shot and fired a high outside floater to beat Wildcats netminder Lindsey Minton and make it a one goal game. The goal, Fardelmann's 11th of the season puts her at 98 career points, two shy of the hundred point mark. Zavisza's assist moves her career points to 96.
BC pulled Schaus for the extra skater, a move that worked in November against Princeton but could not convert on the opportunity.
Schaus made 19 saves in the loss for a tournament total of 55 with four goals allowed.
Juniors Kelli Stack and Molly Schaus were named to the All-Tournament team.
